Billy Talbot Band
Jan 28th: Paradise Lounge, San Francisco
    Jan 30th: Sweetwater, Mill Valley
    Review by Jos Starmans

After their debut at the Old Princeton Landing last October, the Billy Talbot Band returned to the stage at the end of Januari to play two gigs. The shows were recorded for a possible live CD, perhaps to be released later this year.

Both shows had the same setlist. The band started with Fallen Angels, and immediately it was clear that the harmonies had improved a lot since the OPL gig. The band's playing was tight, even though guitarists Billy, Tommy Carns and Matt Piucci switched guitars a lot. Erik Pearson alternated between his Les Paul and keyboards. The rhythm section of bassist Jeff Chase and drummer Stephan Junca also did a great job.

Highlight of the shows was On The Horizon, during which Tommy picked up his banjo. Great song, great tension. Another song that already has caused some stir is Security Girl. The band played extended versions of the song, giving room for solos by the guitarists.

Obviously many people will compare the sound of the Billy Talbot Band with (Neil Young &) Crazy Horse. Though Billy's songs could easily fit into the Crazy Horse repertoire, a big difference to me is Matt's guitar sound. He gives the band a real psychedelic touch.

Although the Paradise Lounge gig had a few problems with the sound (a lotta feedback), the Sweetwater gig was very clean and should have provided enough material to make a great live CD. Something to look forward to...!
